Erratic Thought #5

Who does God hate? I mean, I know that He cannot stand the sight of sin, but are there people that God actually hates?

No, I do not believe that there are. In fact, I am not even sure if He hates the devil (that is a different topic). Because of sin and a lack of repentance, God does deny certain people entrance to heaven and a relationship with Him. However, He does not hate. The most amazing thing about God is that His grace is truly greater than any sin we could ever commit. All we need to do is place our trust in what Jesus did for us and live our lives by the sacrifice He made. That is the amazing message of the gospel: that we do not have a God that condemns us, but one that loves us and offers a way to spend eternity with Him.

Have any of you heard of Westboro Baptist Church? They are a church located in Topeka, Kansas. They claim they are preaching the gospel to nonbelievers, the the way that Christ, Himself would have. You can visit their website at http://www.godhatesfags.com. From there you can find links to related websites, such as: God Hates the World, America is Doomed, Spare Not, and several others. This “church” actually consists of seventy members, fifty-eight of which are part of the same family. Their scripture that they use the most is Leviticus 20:23. It reads,  “You must not live according to the customs of the nations I am going to drive out before you. Because they did all these things, I abhorred them.” WBC believes that every person of every nation is in some way a fag and will be going to hell. This does, of course, exclude members of their community, whom they believe to be God’s chosen people.

These people are horribly misguided. They paint an atrocious picture to nonbelievers of christianity and of what Jesus is all about. Their “religious” activities consist mainly of going to church and standing on street corners, picketing. The events the picket range from sunday service at another church, whom they consider condemned, to funerals honoring the deaths of American soldiers or boy scouts. These people consider the deaths of these American people blessings from God. An excerpt of the church’s press release reads, “WBC engages in daily peaceful sidewalk demonstrations opposing the homosexual lifestyle of soul-damning, nation-destroying filth. We display large, colorful signs containing Bible wordsand sentiments, including: GOD HATES FAGS, FAGS HATE GOD, AIDS CURES FAGS, THANK GOD FORAIDS, FAGS BURN IN HELL, GOD IS NOT MOCKED, FAGS ARE NATURE FREAKS, GOD GAVE FAGS UP, NO SPECIAL LAWS FOR FAGS, FAGS DOOM NATIONS, THANK GOD FOR DEAD SOLDIERS, FAG TROOPS, GOD BLEW UP THE TROOPS, GOD HATES AMERICA, AMERICA IS DOOMED, THE WORLD IS DOOMED, etc.”

Possibly the worst part of this is how they interpret the gospel. When asked how they would recommend reaching the lost for Christ, one of the church’s representatives said: “Well, by telling them the truth, of course. They need to know that God has condemned them to hell and there is nothing they can do about it.”

What these people are doing is misleading and truly horrible. It does, however, make me so much more grateful that the gospel is real and that God’s love is greater than any sin I could ever commit.

I have heard of them… I think they have picketed at our church, Nick. They really are very misguided. I am sorry that they believe such things. But here is a question: will they be in Heaven? It seems that they certainly have faith in Christ.

  2. Your church? wow
I honestly do not see how they could go to heaven. They believe in Christ, that He was real, and that He died, but it doesn’t seem like they have faith in anything He said. Jesus Christ came to die for sinners and to give them a second chance. They do not believe this. They think the world, especially America is doomed and there is nothing we can do about it. These people believe almost the complete opposite of what Jesus said. They may believe in Him, but they do not follow Him.

  3. haha, wow, I feel stupid. YOUR CHURCH IS MY CHURCH.
Gosh… Well, now that I think about it, I beleive I do remember Dave Stone talking about that once.

  4. ha, that’s like me saying to my brother, “hey your mom is calling you.” whether or not someone goes to heaven isn;t for us to decide, but the name of their website infers that they are not really christians, as God told us to love enemies and spread His word. telling other people that they are fags isn’t loving them or spreading His word.

I agree that it is not our job to decide who goes to Heaven. Let me rephrase that as, “Is their faith in Christ legitimate?” Yes, I agree with you both that they are not following Christ’s commands to love one anther, etc., but if we followed that logic, we could come around to thinking that works = salvation, and not to speak for either of you, but I certainly do not believe that works earn salvation. However, while works do not equal salvation, good works are the product of salvation. And yes, I do realize that I am arguing against myself. Both lines of thought have merit. I will conclude my judgemental thought process, and no longer debate others’ salvation.

  6. Well, I never meant to say they don’t DO what Jesus said (implying that works = salvation). I meant that they don’t BELIEVE what He said. And belief and trust in Jesus are what is necessary for salvation.

    Thanks guys.
